Thousands of red-clad union workers demonstrate at Chicago’s premier civic center in support of the city’s teachers union, which is pressing school district officials to meet teachers’ demands.

The demonstration took place in Daley Plaza on Monday, with participants waving signs reading, "Fair Contract" and "United we Bargain, Divided we Beg," Chicago Tribune reported.

The CTU is yet to agree with the officials over matters as payment, a new teacher evaluation process, and a recall policy for laid-off teachers.

The union has threatened a teachers strike starting on September 10 should a settlement evade the two sides.

Addressing the crowd, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Karen Lewis said the union will "work as hard as we can to get a fair contract."

She called Mayor Rahm Emanuel a “liar” and a “bully.”
